Midlife Exercise: You Won't Enjoy Your Retirement As Much Without It!

While it’s true that most Americans are living longer (now 78 compared to 74 in 1980), the down side is that most are doing so with chronic disease and ill health. The New York Times recently reported that becoming more fit in middle age – even if you haven’t bothered with an exercise program before – appears to reshape the landscape of aging. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the Cooper Institute in Dallas gathered medical records of over 18,000 middle-aged men and women with an average age of 49.

At their first check ups, they were all healthy and free of chronic disease. The group was then divided into 5 categories, with most falling in the “least-fit” group. Researchers followed the participants from 1999 to 2009 and reviewed each participants Medicare claim records.

Researchers found that those participants who were least fit at age 49 were also more likely to have developed serious and chronic conditions early in their aging process like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and colon or lung cancer. Those participants who were most fit did not suffer the same conditions early in life, but rather much later in life than those less fit. The results demonstrate that being physically fit now can help to ensure that when you retire, you’ll have years of disease free enjoyment and a better quality of life.
