Yoga Immediately Boosts Your Immune System: Ground Breaking Study Reveals Immediate Changes of 111 Genes At Molecular Level

Previous studies have shown that yoga benefits both physical and mental health, but the mystery of “how” these benefits came about remained. But a study published this spring shed some answers. It showed that just after taking a yoga class, there are almost immediate impacts on gene expression, and particularly in the immune cells.

Prior research has shown yoga can: (1) lower stress, (2) increase bone health, (3) reduce back pain, (4) relieve depression, (5) and lower risk factors for heart disease, and other health benefits.

This new study found genetic evidence of yoga’s impact on the immune system. Ten participants underwent a week long yoga retreat where they practiced yoga, meditation and yoga breathing exercises. The participants’ blood was examined both before and after the retreat. Researchers found that the yoga practice changed expression of 111 genes in circulating immune cells. By comparison, walking or music based relaxation only changed the expression of 38 genes.

Immediate Impact

The study also found that within two hours of a yoga practice, there are significant gene expression changes that have an integral physiological component at the molecular level. This effect is initiated immediately during a practice and may form the basis for long-term stable effects.
